One of the biggest adjustments for foreigners interning in China is the restricted access to familiar apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube—platforms we use daily back home. While Chinese apps offer a wealth of interesting content, staying connected with friends and family often requires access to international platforms. This is where a VPN (Virtual Private Network) comes in handy!

A VPN allows you to bypass China’s firewall and access restricted content. Below is a list of some of the best free and paid VPNs. None of these are sponsored recommendations—our team and friends have personally used them at some point.

Since VPN performance can vary by device and location, we recommend downloading multiple VPNs before arriving in China. Once you're there, you can test them out (most of them provide a free trial, sometime with no time limits) to see which one works best for you! And yes, one of those VPN will allow you to use TikTok in China!

- Lets VPN – Similar to VPNify; many users find it reliable and efficient.
- GogoJump VPN / 狗急快速 – The paid version offers a stable and secure internet connection; this is my personal go-to.
- Astrill – Widely recommended by long-term expats and students in China. Although pricey, it’s one of the most reliable options and one of the few VPNs that allow access to TikTok in China.
